Big Ideas and Basement Blueprints
In the summer of 2014, in the humble setting of April Lowry’s basement, the vision for Ora Dental was born. Fueled by a desire to modernize dental practice management, April began sketching ideas that would eventually lay the foundation for a fully integrated, cloud-based platform. Her goal was ambitious yet straightforward: to help dental practices attract and engage patients, deliver exceptional clinical care, and accelerate revenue cycle performance—all within a single, seamless system.
Turning April’s Vision into a Certified Solution
As the idea gained momentum, April assembled a small team to bring the concept to life. After years of development and refinement, the early version of Ora achieved a major milestone in 2017: certification for Meaningful Use. This validation not only confirmed the software’s security and interoperability but also signaled that Ora was ready to support the complex demands of modern dental organizations.
Building a Better Dental Solution Through Collaboration
The following year marked a turning point. In 2018, Ora partnered with a top five Dental Support Organization (DSO), joining forces with some of the most respected minds in the industry. The cross-functional team documented best practices, mapped out the patient journey, and defined optimal workflows across group scheduling, clinical and revenue cycle operations. This hands-on collaboration laid the groundwork for what would become Ora’s core functionality.
Preparing Ora for Market with PracticeTek
As Ora evolved, the company remained committed to continuous innovation. A strategic alignment with PracticeTek helped ready the platform for broader commercial launch, enabling seamless integrations with sister companies. Features from IntakeQ brought best-in-class digital forms and online scheduling, while Doctible introduced powerful tools for two-way texting, automated recalls, social media management, and other key aspects of patient engagement—solutions now trusted by thousands of practices nationwide.
Victoria M., a Registered Dental Hygienist, was so impressed by Ora as a user that she joined the team to help others experience its benefits.
She shared:
"As a clinician, I utilize Ora because it empowers me to deliver precise, patient-centered care with confidence. It takes the guesswork out of diagnostics and lets me see what’s really going on beneath the surface—so I can make informed decisions that truly impact outcomes. The technology is smart, fast, and intuitive, which means I can stay efficient without compromising quality. It’s not just about working smarter—it’s about giving my patients the level of care they deserve."
Supporting Modern Dental Practices Through Innovation
Today, Ora continues to expand its ecosystem through partnerships with top-tier innovators like DentaXchange, Sota, Pearl AI, Revvy, Mango, Stax, and more. Described by some as “the newest oldest product you can buy,” Ora stands at the intersection of experience and innovation. What began in a basement has grown into a future-ready platform built to support the evolving needs of dental practices everywhere—with the same clarity of vision and determination that started it all.
